While it is a two-dimensional etching, Bird Machine I is reminiscent of an origami crane taking flight, the three-dimensional, sculptural image transposed onto a two-dimensional plane. Delicate, yet striking black lines move the viewer’s eye across contrasting segments of negative space and darker shaded sections. Black smudges creep from the edges of the composition. The black ink used to fix the image seeps into the white paper matting that frames the image, permanently tying the image to the mechanical printmaking process behind its origin. Despite the movements implied by the work, the work itself is static. This Bird Machine is permanently fixed on the page, forever suspended in flight.
