Known for her meticulous diary-keeping, Anne Truitt journaled, “[the sculptures] look so objective. Yet each one sprang from the very core of my subjectivity.” Summer Snow’s dynamic textures make each viewing slightly different depending on the precise angle at which one approaches it. Light dances across the crisscross painted texture on the object’s surface, a record of the artist’s hand in relation to the grain of the wood. Anne Truitt layered many coats of paint, sanding in between applications. Her sand-paint technique created opaque colors and active surfaces, resulting in each encounter with Summer Snow becoming a purely subjective experience.
“I chose to study Anne Truitt because, like me, she lived and worked in Washington DC and Maryland. She also taught at my alma mater, University of Maryland!”
