I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad at Trinity College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland from January to March when I was sent home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eager to learn about my Irish roots, explore different cultures, and challenge myself academically, I set this goal even before entering college. During the summer prior, I juggled 2 part time jobs and an internship to ensure I could independently fund the venture for myself.\u00a0<\/span>I was <\/span>1 of only 2<\/b> American University students to study at Trinity College Dublin for that semester, and I was both anxious and excited to be entering an education system and culture that was different from what I was comfortable with. Although my time was cut short, I certainly made the most of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>

I learned so much from <\/span>4 unique classes<\/b>: Economy of Ireland, Life in Modern Ireland, Democracy and Development, and The European Court of Justice. I tried traditional <\/span>Irish dishes<\/b>, explored <\/span>historic sites<\/b>, and even advanced my dance skills with some <\/span>Irish step dance classes<\/b>! I lived and learned from my roommates that were from <\/span>Australia<\/b>, <\/span>Austria<\/b>, and <\/span>Canada<\/b>, hosting cultural dinners to learn about each others traditions. I heard the opinions of professors and Irish students when <\/span>Brexit<\/b> occurred on January 31, and travelled to <\/span>Northern Ireland<\/b> where I learned more about the history of \u201cThe Troubles\u201d and the Civil War.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>

I also travelled to 4 other countries: <\/span>France, England, Greece, and Denmark. <\/b>These weekend trips were an opportunity to meet up with other friends who were studying abroad and to learn and explore as much as I could.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

My short time on the Emerald Isle taught me to embrace exploring new places alone, to strike up a conversation for the sake of finding commonality, and to always prepare for a rainy day… literally! <\/span><\/p>

I am originally from a small town in Upstate, New York called Newark, and I came to Washington, D.C. for a change of pace, scenery, and opportunity. I recently graduated from\u00a0American University<\/strong> with a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies:\u00a0Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government (CLEG)<\/strong> and a minor in Justice<\/strong>. I also earned a certificate in Advanced Leadership Studies<\/strong> through the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During my time at AU, I sought to explore all of my passions while developing myself personally and professionally. I took advantage of internships, university clubs\/activities, community events, and a study abroad experience. I was a proud member of the American University Dance Team<\/strong> where I was able to continue my years of dance training while also representing my university. I also had gained experience as the Director of Outreach<\/strong> for Democracy Matters, a club advocating for campaign finance reform, and the Director of Community Service<\/strong> and an Angel Brother for Alpha Kappa Psi, a professional business organization.<\/p>\n

In the spring of 2020, I travelled to Dublin, Ireland to challenge myself personally and academically at Trinity College Dublin<\/strong>. Although I was abruptly sent home amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I am extremely grateful for the 2 months that I did spend there. I learned how to navigate cultural differences, explore my heritage, and adapt to an entirely different education system.<\/p>\n

I have grown a lot since the time I said goodbye to my little village and embraced a city of power, influence, and opportunity. As I have taken on new challenges, I have learned a lot about myself. I am someone who enjoys finding commonalities with a variety of different people. I embrace the ability to learn new skills and take on hard tasks, and I feel most fulfilled when I know that I am of service to someone.
