I have been able to develop from a student to a teaching assistant, and now the Student Co-Director of the program. The program has allowed me to produce research on justice reform and injustices while giving me the chance to connect with nonprofit organizations that pride themselves on solving Social Justice Issues and producing leaders of the future. This extraordinary program consists of making lifelong friends and creating\/implementing social action projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For my first year, I was grouped with 5 other talented young ladies. Our social action project was dedicated to Black and Brown students who were affected by the achievement gap. During the implementation of our project, I created an Instagram account so we can give information about the college process and financial aid. We all created posts for the Instagram account, about 2-3 times a month. I also decided to work for the Raising a Village Foundation to tutor students in marginalized communities. To help get Black incarcerated youth these services I volunteered at a nonprofit organization in DC that focuses on helping incarcerated Black youth. This organization is a nonprofit organization that uses a research-based framework of comprehensive reform strategies to accelerate student achievement in schools across the country. During my internship, I supported the academic and personal growth of my 8th-grade students at DC Prep. I lead small group math tutoring and goal-setting sessions and used data to track performance and improve math instruction. To build trust I integrated with the DC Prep community by meeting with staff and parents and participating in school events. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What I learned from this internship is how to advance my leadership skills, demonstrate authority effectively, foster positive relationships between individuals, and refine my instructional skills.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Starting my journey at American University, I was given the opportunity to join the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program. I&#8217;m a member of Alpha Phi Sigma (Criminal Justice Honor Society) and a Harry S. Truman Scholar nominee. Within the last year, I have worked as a Legal Intern with the ACLU and an 8th-grade math tutor in DC Prep Schools.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the years, I have been researching policies on abolishing solitary confinement, the Juvenile Justice &amp; Reform Act, and the <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act.\u00a0 <\/span>My graduate plan is to receive a Master&#8217;s of Public Policy. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0With an MPP I would be able to learn how to evaluate policy issues and programs within the criminal justice system. Also, I would be able to propose recommendations within legislation or types of programs that create a more just system for offenders. Upon completion of my graduate studies I plan to apply for jobs within the nonprofit or government sector, that focus on the criminal justice system. I plan for my early post-graduate years to be filled with work and volunteer experience, so I am prepared for executive leadership positions later in my career.
