“My mother says I’m great
And it always makes me sad”

This line comes from the first verse of Wilco’s song “Happiness”, off of their new albumĀ Schmilco. This is the opening line, and the basic structure is “My mother says,” and, “It makes me sad.” The rest of the words describe what his mother says, and how often it makes him sad. These lines set the tone for the song, which describes how despite searching for happiness through his mother and her actions/presence, he only finds depression, later describing his mother’s death and the absence of her body/presence.
