My name is Liza Layer and I am currently a sophomore at American University, where I am pursuing a major in International Studies and a minor in Economics, along with a certificate in Russian Translation. I was born in Moscow, Russia where I lived until I was five years old, after which I relocated to Massachusetts. I have been back in Russia numerous times which has allowed me to observe the political and social dynamics in the country. Even at a young age, I was interested in people’s opinions about the situation around them and was eager to see the changes that occurred in Moscow during the time I was gone. My interest in this topic has led me to decide that during this year in Olson Scholars I will focus my research on the evolution of public opinion in Russia and how it has been affected by current events in the world and the Russian government sanctioned propaganda. In my free time I enjoy reading, traveling, and watching old classics of Russian cinematography.
