Digital Archives: Historical Judiciary Square

This image shows the initial architectural sketch for Judiciary Square’s first building, the City Hall of Washington. You can see the cultural influence of the other buildings of the age in D.C., as the columns resemble the construction of the Supreme Court building. The dual wings of the building’s structure also reflect the cultural precedent of the bicameral legislature of the U.S. government that had formed itself by the time of the building’s construction.
