This Safeway at the corner of R Street and 17th Street is only three blocks from the apartment at 1618 S Street. It serves as the closest grocery store as well as one of the closes places of community interaction outside of the many homes beyond the S Street. Business like grocery stores are so integral to a neighborhood because of the simple fact that everyone needs to buy food at some point, it functions as a meeting place for the residents of the subsection of Dupont Circle. Many restaurants have made their way into the surrounding areas, but eating out every single meal is incredibly difficult to do. The Safeway attracts citizens of all demographics to a single location over the span of many city blocks. Additionally, an alternative to this retail space is almost nonexistent which gives an unlikely chain store a niche in a small and vibrant community.
