Chain Reaction: BGR The Burger Joint, Erin Jackson, March, 16, 2012 http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2012/03/chain-reaction-bgr-the-burger-joint-review.html

In this article about BGR The Burger Joint based on the author’s tasting experience, and she wrote this review after tasting two burger, one classic burger and one The Wellington, in the chain shop of BGR at San Diego. In her opinion, both burger were pretty awful, and her burger, which was ordered medium rare, came out closer to well-done, with no pink in the center, and even patty was unevenly cooked, dry, and had no character.

As a contributor to San Diego Magazine and city editor for Dining Out San Diego, Erin has enough experience to provide the exactly information to me, and she also has been digging up the best bites in San Diego (and beyond!) for Serious Eats since 2010. According to this review, it totally opposite “the Best Burger in DC”, but it provides the real condition of BGR. So when I choose describe this burger place, I have to go to try it by myself rather than just listening to others.

Ford, Elise Hartman (2006). Night and Day D.C. San Francisco: Pulse Guides. ISBN 9780976601340.

In this book, the author introduced that Thomas Circle was constructed as a traffic circle as part of the original L’Enfant Plan for the District of Columbia, and the circle was named for American Civil War General George Henry Thomas. Then he stated the detailed development history of Thomas Circle and its reconstruction, including around additional building projects, such as crosswalk and bike lanes.

Ford does know DC, and she even wrote a guidebook about DC and keep update this book every year, so I truly trust her professional about DC’s landscape. After reading her article, I am starting knowing that when I try to understand Thomas Circle, I should know its history, even the history of the building around it, such as National City Christian Church and Martin Luther Place.

Williams, Paul Kelsey. The Neighborhoods of Logan, Scott, and Thomas Circles. N.p.: n.p., n.d. Print.

This book talks about the area surrounding the closely located Logan, Scott, and Thomas Circles has for many years been at the center of a rich history. These neighborhoods have played a part in the great story of the capital city and have been home to the workingman and woman, the wealthy, the middle class, and the politically powerful alike.

From this book, I could analysis why Thomas Circle is such a center around deluxe hotels and some important buildings, because, at early time, Thomas circle has been the center of wealth. So this book helps me to think Thomas circle rhetorically. Not only I just described what buildings are surrounding Thomas circle, and what those buildings looks like, but also I have to analysis why those buildings tend to be surrounding here, rather than anywhere else. In conclusion, this book help me to explore more history about Thomas circle, and it also makes me understand how this area formed like this way.

This article mainly discuss the connection between sunlight and human. It claims that when the sun comes up again, and sunlight hits the optic nerve, some of that light is sent to the gland in the brain in charge of melatonin. In response, melatonin secretion decreases. When the sun goes down, the body increases its secretion of melatonin. So sunlight do have effects on human’s moods.

In my analysis, I tend to show how important of sun exposure in interior design, and sun exposure really could affect our fortune. Because, through this article, I know sunlight could affect our moods, so it affects our fortune indirectly.

Exterior Feng Shui, which especially used to choose the location of tomb in China, deals with the surroundings of a building, including streets and other buildings, its shape and landscaping, as well as with the colors and materials of the outside and inside of a space.

Then I compare the homepage of BGR with this tip. The root sentence is “I believe that”. “still” is an adverb, and it means continue. “people are really good at heart” is a subordinate clause, and it is used to explain what I still believe. “In spite of everything” illustrates that “I still believe” happened after which situation.

Digital Environmental Description

The Digital Environmental Description of BGR The Burger Joint

After visiting and tasting at BGR The Burger Joint personally, I decided to know more about this burger place due to the good experience there. Browsing  its website is the direct way to get those information, and I am able to know how they show themselves. I tend to describe the layout of this website firstly and explain reasons why it design in this way.360%e5%8f%8d%e9%a6%88%e6%84%8f%e8%a7%81%e6%88%aa%e5%9b%be16421028497688

Clean and blank are the first impres
sion to me about its home page due to white as the whole background. At the top area of home page, it shows us the heading “ THE BURGER JOINT” and the logo. After heading, there are eight categories, such as “menu” and “contact”, and people can click those button to observe information which they want. Then, under eight categories, I saw nine slides which occupy almost ⅔ areas of home page, and those slides displayed some attractive pictures of its classic burgers and coming burgers. Each slides also mate some short words to explain what are those pictures, and people could click every slides to get detailed information. Moreover, at the left bottom of this page, I saw a pink rectangle with a headline of a top news “Best of DC 2016 Readers’ Choice”, which showed how welcome this burger place is.

      360%e5%8f%8d%e9%a6%88%e6%84%8f%e8%a7%81%e6%88%aa%e5%9b%be16411213856982

After described home page, I will mainly describe two category pages: “menu” and “about us”. Opening menu page, two photos of delicious food display firstly, and then we could saw a list of all products which it provides. In my opinion, there are one advantage and one disadvantage about the way they showed their menu. On one hand, its menu is humanized, because it teaches people how to build up their own meals step by step rather than just showing the products it have, like other website. On the other hand, it is too concise to show its products, and even there is no any picture of those burgers, which will makes people have no idea of those products look like.

 360%e5%8f%8d%e9%a6%88%e6%84%8f%e8%a7%81%e6%88%aa%e5%9b%be1625111691110103

At the “About us” page, it also show two foods picture at top, and then it start introducing themselves. To begin with, it tells about the start of BGR and speaks its promise that “Food that was thought out, fresh, and deserving of our customers.” At the second paragraph, it talks about the safety of their food, and it said that “At BGR, our kitchens are open for transparency into the quality food we use everyday and for customers to connect with the process.” I could ensure that its kitchens are really open and transparent, and I watched the whole process of making my burger.

Why the website of BGR The Burger Joint designed in this way? I will explore those reasons deeply. Look and feel is pretty important to a website, and Kara Jensen, the author of What is the “Look and Feel” of a Website? And Why It’s Important”, said that “Your website’s overall look and feel is important because it instantly conveys an attitude to your clients before they even start reading the content on the site.” This rule is more significant for BGR’ s website, because the look of website will influence the people’s impression to physical stores. As I said before, the website of BGR is clean and blank, so now I understand that clean and blank style will make people feel it friendly and approachable. Like its physical store which I have gone to before, the huge space give people no pressure, so people will feel more comfortable both browsing its website and eating at its physical stores. Moreover, this website is good at using big picture to catch people’s eyes, because people are always sensitive with images. This website also tend to use impactive color to express important information. For example, at the left bottom of homepage, it use pink, which is different with other colors in this page, to tell us that is is the best choice in DC. Because this information show how delicious it is, it have to highlight it.

All in all, the website of BGR The Burger Joint is clean and approachable, like its physical stores, and it is clear to show its information. Only in this way, could people know the culture and story of this burger place.

Building Environment Description, Interior

The Interior Site: Thomas Circle

Thomas Circle is a remarkable traffic circle in washington, DC, and it is across by Massachusetts Avenue, Vermont Avenue, 14th Avenue, and M street Avenue. It is named for memorializing American Civil War General George Henry Thomas.

       img_5060

When I went to Thomas Circle, my eyes was caught by the bronze sculpture that general Thomas is riding on the horseback at the center of Thomas Circle. I was impressed by the sculpture due to a huge contrast between the scenes of crowded and uncrowded: at the center of Thomas Circle, there is only a sculpture around by lawns, unlike other traffic circles, even no any trees, but a lot of traditional and modern buildings are layout around Thomas Circle, which makes the bronze sculpture stand out. I also was impressed by those buildings because of totally different styles among them. John Russell Pope’s National City Christian Church and Luther Place Memorial Church could represent traditional style buildings, and National Geographic Museum could stand for modern buildings. At the northwest corner of Thomas Circle, unique features of John Russell Pope’s National City Christian Church, such as whole white external walls and six marble columns, is impressive, and whole red external walls and triangular roofs make Luther Place different from its behind constructions.img_5061 I have gone in two modern buildings behind Thomas Circle. Washington Plaza Hotel obtain delicate adornment, and the huge fish tank and fantastic ceiling lamps leave me a unforgettable impression. Although I went into there and pretend that I arrived a wrong address, those staffs also treat me friendly and enthusiastically. After coming out from Washington Plaza Hotel, I was going to visit National Geographic Museum. There is a ticket entrance on the right after entering the museum, and, on the left, people can buy some souvenirs in a store. I also appreciated some special artworks at the glass walls of this museum.

img_5057 Obviously, Thomas Circle is a special and attractive place which makes upper class people together, and this has been happening since many years ago. Three circles, Logan, Thomas, and Scott Circles, are forming a triangle area, and “the area surrounding has for many years been at a center of a rich history.” (Paul Kelsey Williams) Most of those influential citizens, such as the wealthy, the middle class, and the politics, have been home here, so Thomas Circle is a really important place in the early time. With time passing, some constructions and reconstructions processed here and form present arrangement gradually, but the noble blood are still trickling on the body of Thomas Circle. At present, most deluxe hotels choose to open near Thomas Circle, and there are still some upper class people living here.

All in all, Thomas Circle NW is a special place which is surrounded by traditional and modern buildings. I can feel that the unique atmosphere at Thomas Circle is attractive for the wealthy from long time ago, those buildings are just the expression of this atmosphere.

Analysis #4

The Summary of His & Hers: Designing for a Post-Gender Society

In the article of “His & Hers: Designing for a Post-Gender Society”, Suzanne Tick claimed that, because of having a critical eyes on society’s issues and having the responsibility of promoting the environment of acceptance, designers have to create the gender-neutral design for that everyone can have their own individuality. To begin with, the author introduced the phenomenon and trend in the world that there is obscureness between definitions of masculine and feminine at present, then she gave us some specific examples to explain this phenomenon. She believed that those trends of gender-neutral firstly appeared at beauty and fashion, and, in opposite, architecture and interior design process slowly to have the unisex acceptance. In other words, there are still a lot of puzzles in unisex environment, so designers need to solve those problems.

In many areas, today’s design are mainly from male’s perspective, because males have a big power and hold the dominating role in the history. However, with the cause of gender equity and some movements such as LGBTQ rights and acceptence of same-sex marriage, women play a more prominent role, especially in the workplace. As a result, many designers start to think that how they could combine the gender understanding with their works.

In some areas, designers have already embraced the trend of gender neutral, such as beauty and fashion and the position in work, to complete the wish that people do not want to be identified as one or another, so it illustrates the main argument that  designers have the responsibility of promoting the environment of acceptance and create the gender-neutral design for that everyone can have their own individuality.Due to have fast cycles, beauty and fashion design were faster than architecture and interior design to follow the trend of unisex, such as Alexander Wang’s women’s coat from Fall 2015 has masculine tailoring with a military look, which was making that outlooks of males and females become more confusing and similar. In addition, “transgender people were viewed as outcasts,”(Suzanne Tick, 2015) but they can become the CEO of a big corporate now. All of these explained that gender neutral starts blending into our life and word gradually.

At present, we still have some problems of unisex in public places and office, and the mission of designers is making people feel more adapted through gender-neutral designing. People always feel sensitive about privacy issues. For example, bathrooms are a serious puzzle part of addressing gender inclusively, because it is very embarrassed for them to choose which bathroom should they go. Therefore, designers need to begin universal design in order to make people could do what they want to do, no matter who they are.

All in all, in order to embrace the trend that “masculine and feminine definitions are being switched and obscured”(Suzanne Tick, 2015), designers have to create universal design. Only in this way, could people live in the gender-neutral and individuality environment and collaborate closely.

Analysis #3:The Summary of “Recognizing Campus Landscapes as Learning Spaces”

The Summary of “Recognizing Campus Landscapes as Learning Spaces”

In their article, “Recognizing Campus Landscapes as Learning Spaces,” Kathleen Scholl and Gowri Gulwadi claimed that the holistic learning space, not just not just fragmented indoors in designated instructional spaces, has a positive effect including direct attention, problem solving, focus and concentration, impulse inhibition, and memory on students’ learning experience. They believed that well-connected indoors and open spaces on campuses not only could help students more engage in learning community, but also it has advantage on disappearing students’ higher risk of attentional fatigue. Then, they focus on two significant concepts to explain more about how physical layout of campus could help students: 1) direct and indirect attention and restoration, and 2) a holistic landscape.

Before talking about two concepts, two authors discussed a historical view of college campuses, which relates to the style of present campus. They found that, at early time, the wish of founders of college campuses was building an ideal and open community where students were able to learn and develop freely. The appearance of land-grant institutions in 1862 started to protect students from outside world, then the vehicles kept campuses disconnected with outside. Even, until today, some campuses still continue to be mainly to a center of teaching and learning in open space. In conclusion, older campuses tend to be isolated with outside, but newer campuses are more likely to be open.

Next, they started talking about the first concept that a well-designed campus was an necessary part of  educational experience of students, which relates to the main points that the holistic learning space influences students’ learning Because natural landscapes efficiently eliminate students’ mentally fatigue, and the interaction between them and nature could increase their cognition abilities, which have a huge positive impact on their performance in daily life. When students process various information sources, their cognition skills have been improved. In conclusion, after deal with numerous of natural landscape, students will learn and engage more than before.

The second concept is that if students want to enjoy holistic learning, they should learn in a holistic place, and this concept also response to the main point. In order to illustrate this concept, Kathleen Scholl and Gowri Gulwadi used a framework enhance the human-nature interaction (indoor, urban, fringe, production landscape, wilderness, and specific species) with three modes (indirect, incidental and intentional). The attention restoration cycle is the most important factor in holistic experiencing in campuses, because all physical design features could influence attention restoration. Students have to understand that their study life is dynamic. They used to study indoors, and breaks at outdoors between classes help them replenish, which is a cycle. In conclusion, indoors and outdoors are a integrality, and people should not separate them apart, so that is why holistic landscapes is for holistic learning.

Finally, Kathleen Scholl and Gowri Gulwadi concluded that indoors space in campuses could give students the academic study experience, but combining human-nature interaction could give students integrated study experiencing, which means the holistic learning. Only in this way, could students enjoy attention replenishing and cognition increasing. At last, Kathleen Scholl and Gowri Gulwadi suggest two notions in order to recognizing campus landscapes as learning spaces.
