Reflections On My Experience

Reflecting On My Experiences

During my freshman year, my issue group studied how different factors affect refugee and immigrant integration and naturalization. Our project culminated in a virtual fundraiser for a scholarship that went to two students who were first-generation immigrant high students going to a college or university. While we couldn’t execute our project to our full, original intent due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was still, by all means, a success. While I was able to learn more about this issue on a personal level, I gained so much more from this. I was able to develop real-time, hands-on experience in how to adapt to changing circumstances. Being able to adapt to the situation we were in, in the best way possible to still complete our project. I also improved my skills in working with others by working with a group that at times had conflicting ideas, and had adapted to working on a group project while all of us were on various sides of the country.

This year, now working by myself, I have decided to focus my research on gun violence. My project is a social media campaign on addressing misinformation and misconceptions surrounding gun violence and firearm legislation. It will also serve as a platform to discuss how certain views on the topic formed and work to spread accurate information. Throughout this campaign, I will also be running a fundraiser for The Sandy Hook Promise, an organization whose mission intersects with mine. I once again have to put my experience I’ve learned into action. While I cannot roll-out my project to the full extent that I would have liked, I have adjusted and made a plan that I believe will still have an impact and reach the goal I have in mind.
