Exploring the African Haitian Slave Religious Experience

Context

The attached work sample is a mini research paper that I completed for my introductory English class in Spring 2020. I spent six weeks diligently researching information on the African Haitian slave religious experience  in order to curate the paper. I used MLA formatting to accurately cite my sources, which I found from varying scholarly journals. I formulated the argument that the religious experiences of African Haitian slaves were not monolithic or static.

I feel as if the attached work sample adequately displays my ability to conduct research, synthesize information, support and argument, and  draw logical conclusions. Completing the work sample was no simple task, and the time that I spent on it I feel also demonstrates my ability to stay dedicated to a project. I have done similar research papers before, but my predominant use of print books and scholarly journals as sources was a new endeavor that I am glad to have done. I hope that you find the research paper intriguing!

AFROTC Experience Reflection

Context

The attached work sample is a reflection piece I curated for a leadership course I took. After reading  The Crucibles of Leadership by Warren G. Bennis and Robert J Thomas, I felt moved to reflect on my experiences in Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC). I related the text to AFROTC with their field training requirement, with their instruction on how to be a leader, and with their emphasis on approaching problems with resiliency.

I feel as if this work sample adequately displays my capacity for self-reflection, which I feel is a necessary skill to succeed in all professional fields. Completing the work sample was very therapeutic and eye opening; I feel as if the critical thinking I used to reflect was necessary for me to get the most out of my AFROTC experiences. I hope you find my reflective thoughts engaging!

Work Sample Three

Context

For the 2020-2021 academic year, I did work to assess the role of multicultural representation in young adult fiction literature on youth character development.
I found that the presence, or lack thereof, such novels impacts young adult’s abilities to affirm self-image and self-esteem, increase literacy, and build cultural awareness. After assessing the current efforts regarding my topic, I decided to focus on amplifying awareness amongst youth about fantasy multicultural young adult novels.

To reflect on this experience, I was able to learn three standout things. I learned how to create book reviews. I learned how to connect with local agencies (DCPL). I also got to learn about video editing and graphic design. Furthermore, I was able to build newfound confidence in two key areas. I often had to pivot when my plans went awry, and became more confident in my ability to execute in the face of adversity. Additionally, my entire project allowed me to practice setting a plan, executing a plan, and reflecting on a plan, which has made me more confident in my abilities to lead myself to success.

Linked you will find a presentation detailing my work to research and efforts to accomplish my goal. I hope you enjoy learning about my work!
