Each year, the Folger Institute awards seven long-term and 45 short-term fellowships. Semi-residential fellowships are supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, endowments from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and additional named endowments. The criteria for eligibility are explained below for each category of fellowship. In addition to the annual competitions, the Folger Institute may use its discretion to make additional awards and to supplement stipends.

Long-term fellowships support scholars in residence for six to nine months. These awards are available exclusively in this academic year and will allow for one semester of residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library and one semester of residence wherever the fellow might choose: at their home institution, or another archive, institute, library, museum, or research center, anywhere in the world. The monthly stipend is $5,555.55 for a maximum of $50,000 (for nine months). Scholars who are awarded this special fellowship are expected to spend a minimum of four months in residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Scholars must hold a terminal degree in their field in order to be eligible for a long-term fellowship.

Short-term fellowships support scholars in residence for one to three months with a monthly stipend of $2,500. Scholars must hold a terminal degree in their field in order to be eligible for a short-term fellowship. The Folger has now opened its short-term fellowships to members of the performing arts community, as well as scholars working at archives, museums, and libraries. We welcome applications from archivists, creative artists, curators, filmmakers, librarians, performers, and playwrights whose research will benefit from focused engagement with the Folger collections.
