NEW JAPANESE STUDIES MAJOR FOR FALL 2022!!!

We are beyond excited to announce our new Japanese Studies major beginning in the fall 2022 semester. The American University Board of Trustees approved the new major on Friday, May 13^th. The course requirements for our new major are as follows:

Course Requirements

Required (12 credit hours)

• JAPN-314 Advanced Japanese I (3)
• JAPN-315 Advanced Japanese II (3)
• JAPN-414 Japanese Translation (3)
• JAPN-415 Japanese Civilization (3)

Linguistics (3 credit hours)
Complete 3 credit hours from the following, or other coursework approved by program director:

• JAPN-311 Japanese Linguistics (3)

Capstone (3 credit hours)

• JAPN-488 Capstone Project (3) (topics)

Electives (18 credit hours)
Complete 18 credit hours from the following, or other coursework approved by program director:

• JAPN-210 Minorities in Japan
• JAPN-310 Advanced Topics in Japanese (3) [Japanese Media and Cinema, Japanese for Professional Purposes, etc.]
• JAPN-396 Selected Topics: Non-Recurring (1-6) (approved topic)
• JAPN-410 Advanced Japanese Topics II (3) [Japanese Literature, Post-WWII Japan, etc.]
• JAPN-496 Selected Topics: Non-Recurring (1-6) (approved topic)
