About Me

Kaniya Harris, an undergraduate student at American University in Washington, DC, is pursuing a Bachelors of Arts degree in Justice and Law. She is also working towards a minor in Sociology and a Certificate in Advanced Leadership Studies through the School of Public Affairs.

Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Kaniya has been devoted to equity and social justice through advocacy and reform in her community. She began fighting for individuals from different backgrounds in high school by speaking to administrators, students, the Board of Education, and Jefferson County Public Schools officials. At American University, Kaniya is the current Event Director for Black Student Union, the Director of AUSG Women’s Initiative, and a member of the AU Honors Program. Kaniya has worked for Greater Louisville Inc. – The Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Jeffersontown Chamber of Commerce, the Legacy Benefits Group, and Inclusive Transportation LLC. Currently, Kaniya is a Disney Dreamer who continues to focus on creating meaningful dialogue and change in her community. In August, she founded a Nonprofit LLC called KyInclusive LLC which is dedicated to bringing awareness, assistance, and solutions to houselessness among youth in Kentucky.

In the future, Kaniya hopes to raise public awareness on different issues and change oppressive systems that are founded on microaggressions by becoming an Immigration Lawyer. She wants to help publicize policies that focus on the needs of historically oppressed individuals by reshaping our society’s norms. She also wants to reshape and change America’s democracy by removing white supremacist ideologies.
