Kaniya Harris is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Justice, Law, & Criminology (JLC) and Sociology, from American University. Alongside her majors, she’s also receiving a minor in Business and Entertainment and a Certificate in Advanced Leadership Studies. Throughout her academic journey, she’s been recognized for her dedication and achievements, including receiving a Certificate in Collaborative Leadership from the Sine Institute of Policy & Politics, participation in the SPA Leadership Program as a Teacher’s Assistant, membership in the SPA Honors Program, AU Honors Program, as well as consistently making the Dean’s List.
In her professional capacity, she currently serves as the Communications Co-Chair for the Montgomery County chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), where she fosters community relationships and enhances communication efforts through visually compelling graphics and designs. Additionally, she is a member of the Board of Directors for Pro-Choice Maryland. Her commitment to activism also extends to her involvement with Advocates For Youth as a Youth Activist, where she co-leads the Youth Abortion Support Collective Mid-Atlantic Region and advocates for reproductive justice through storytelling, grassroots organizing, and policy advocacy. She also brings leadership experience through various roles, including serving as a Peer Facilitator, President of the Black Student Union, and Director for Students for Change, where she has implemented new campus-wide initiatives (i.e getting an emergency contraceptive vending machine on campus), managed budgets, and fostered collaboration within communities.
In addition to her academic and professional pursuits, she has gained valuable experience through past internships and jobs at organizations such as The Legacy Benefits Group, The Jeffersontown Chamber of Commerce, Greater Louisville Inc., and the Arlington Chamber of Commerce where she developed skills in data management, event coordination, and community engagement.
Her diverse experiences and passion for social justice drives her to continue making meaningful contributions to her community and beyond.
