I think you’re off to a great start with this discourse analysis on the perception of females in the Balkans peacebuilding. The dichotomy between these women you’ve found and the texts you will analyze showing how females both fulfill and subvert their “natural roles” should be to be interesting and informative. For where you’re looking to gain discourses from, should you not also look at how television, movies, advertisements and the like are portraying females in the Balkans in this time since this can help reshape or reinforce people’s pre-convinced notions? I think looking at this layer of discourse would add to your project.
I look forward to seeing how your project progresses.

– I love your puzzle on the whole! Definitely interested to see how this research plays out.
– It might be interesting to look at how men’s involvement in other political peace process was represented for historical context.
– With your discussion of reflexivity, I think a discussion of your intellectual leanings would also be warranted. Being Serbian-American will change your project, but what worldview is formed by those experiences?
-I think more evidence specifically discussing the women involved in the peace-building process (vs. about how women are naturally not involved in politics with the comments about the wives) would make the case for your discourses’ existence stronger.
– What do the women involved in the peacebuilding process have to say?

Great job establishing why the identities of women in the Balkans is important.
I thought you had a strong slide for literature review. I appreciated that the bullet points were concise and that you had a good breakdown of the various points.
The discursive context was very well established as were the representations you mapped. By the time you reached the “Project Design” slide, I had a very good sense of what you had done so far.
I think like my project, your identity ties deeply into you research and why you are trustworthy. I think you did an excellent job with this.
The trade-off explanation for why you picked this for small-n was very well explained. I think it can be a challenge to explain when another choice may be the “obvious” one. I commend you for tackling something so close to you and trying to solve it using scholarly methodologies.
The one caution I would give you is saying “of course.” When you say that you are making a knowledge claim, so if you do say of course, make sure it is backed up with a source.
Great job. I am really excited about your project.
