Before leaving for thanksgiving break, my peers and I from the Community Based Research Scholars (CBRS) program spent three hours volunteering with We Are Family, a DC based non-profit fighting food insecurity among senior citizens. The CBRS program encourages us to work with DC organizations to learn about and give back to the DC community. Issues of homelessness, poverty, and housing and food insecurity in the District are closely tied to issues of racial discrimination in the city’s past. The opportunity to learn by being engaged in the community is one of the best parts of the CBRS program.
