Smart Start for a Healthy Heart:

Helping Young Women Create a Heart Healthy Future

The Smart Start initiative focuses on providing young adult women with the tools and skills needed to cultivate and maintain a heart healthy lifestyle. Throughout this 6 week program, trained nutrition professionals will guide you through 3 different sessions: the Why, the What, and the How. Each session will provide you with a different aspect necessary for starting your healthy heart journey.

“About 1 in 16 women age 20 and older (6.2%) have coronary heart disease, the most common type of heart disease”- CDC

Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year”- American Heart Association

Chronic disease education tends to be targeted at older adult populations. We feel that young adult women are often over looked when it comes to heart health education, despite being part of an at risk population.

Smart Start aims to change that.

Our “Why” provides women with risk assessment and education on CVD. We aim to provide motivation to begin to cultivate a heart healthy lifestyle as a form of prevention. The “What” portion addresses the role diet plays in CVD prevention. We discuss the different types of fats and how to increase healthy fat consumption. Finally, our “How” sessions provide women with the tools to create SMART goals so they can maintain the changes they started through Smart Start.
