The “Research” Reality: Teaching Research Integrity in the Age of AI

Thursday, March 26 from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM | SIS Founders Room

Hosted by Katherine Mahajan (CFE Instructional Technology & AI Manager), Alison Thomas (Assistant Dean of Academic Integrity) & Sonja Walti (CFE Faculty Associate with a focus on AI in Teaching and Academic Integrity / SPA | Public Administration & Policy)

Whether accidentally, naively, or with purpose, our students use generative AI to assist with their research. While some no doubt do so looking for time-saving and grade-maximizing shortcuts, many assume they are in full control of their output, that – like internet searches of old – generative AI tools are merely assisting them with outlining ideas, structuring their thoughts, finding evidence, and locating appropriate sources. Yet, what feels, looks, and reads like thorough research turns up hallucinated facts, mis-attributed evidence, and made-up sources. How did we get here? What should we do about it? What warrants an AIC referral?
