Syllabus Guide
Crafting a Course Syllabus
This resource on crafting a course syllabus includes a syllabus template with the standard components of a well-designed syllabus.
View a list of class meeting dates for the Fall 2025 semester. Review AU’s Academic Calendar, and list of major religious holy days to keep in mind as you set class meeting dates, assignment deadlines, and assessments. Use the final exam schedule to determine when to hold your final exam or set a deadline for your final assignment.
Below, you will find a list of university policies and descriptions of support services that can be included in your syllabus based on your preferences and the content of your course. Please note that this information is updated regularly as policies and resources are subject to change.
As you are developing or revising your syllabus, consider that it should be a detailed and clear compilation of your course’s purpose, expectations, and policies, presented in a way that welcomes students into the learning process. The syllabus is often the first impression that students get of you and your course. Thus, it sets the tone for the course and can play a critical role in establishing a sense of belonging and equity in the classroom.

We suggest all instructors include an Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy. There is no blanket AU policy regarding AI use in classes. For additional guidance around AI, please access the Academic Integrity Office’s resources on their SharePoint site (access for AU faculty with login), this PDF overview of AI, or review the sample AI policies on the syllabus template.

Emergency Preparedness
Sample:
In the event of an emergency, American University will implement a plan for meeting the needs of all members of the university community. Should the University be required to close for a period of time, we are committed to ensuring that all aspects of our educational programs will be delivered to our students. These may include altering and extending the duration of the traditional term schedule to complete essential instruction in the traditional format and/or the use of distance instructional methods. Specific strategies will vary from class to class, depending on the format of the course and the timing of the emergency. Faculty will communicate class-specific information to students via AU email and Canvas, while students must inform their faculty immediately of any emergency-related absence. Students are responsible for checking their AU email regularly and keeping themselves informed of emergencies. In the event of an emergency, students should refer to the AU Student Portal, the AU website, and the AU information line at (202) 885-1100 for general university-wide information, as well as contact their faculty and/or respective dean’s office for course and school/college specific information.

Sharing of Course Content
Sample:
Students are not permitted to make visual or audio recordings, including live streaming, of classroom lectures or any class related content, using any type of recording devices (e.g., smart phone, computer, digital recorder, etc.) unless prior permission from the instructor is obtained, and there are no objections from any of the students in the class. If permission is granted, personal use and sharing of recordings and any electronic copies of course materials (e.g., PowerPoints, formulas, lecture notes and any classroom discussions online or otherwise) is limited to the personal use of students registered in the course and for educational purposes only, even after the end of the course.
Exceptions to allowable class recordings will be made for students with official disability accommodations allowing class recordings, and in those circumstances, recordings are limited to the personal use of students as described herein.
To supplement the classroom experience, lectures may be audio or video recorded by faculty and made available to students registered for this class. Faculty may record classroom lectures or discussions for pedagogical use, future student reference, or to meet the accommodation needs of students with a documented disability. These recordings are limited to personal use and may not be distributed (fileshare), sold, or posted on social media outlets without the written permission of faculty.
Unauthorized downloading, file sharing, distribution of any part of a recorded lecture or course materials, or using information for purposes other than the student’s own learning may be deemed a violation of American University’s Student Conduct Code and subject to disciplinary action (see Student Conduct Code VI. Classroom Behavior and Academic Dishonesty).
