Leadership In Action: Emma Lovato

Emma Lovato, Class of 2022

Communications, Minor in Economics
Barista at Tatte Bakery & Cafe and the Davenport Coffee Lounge

Who am I?
Hi! I’m Emma (she/they), I’m in my third year of undergrad.
What are you involved with on campus?
Right now I’m the Director of Print Production for American Literary Magazine. I was formerly the Creative Director for AmLit, as well as the Head Lifeguard for AU Recreational Sports and Fitness.
What do you do in your job?
I’m a barista at The Dav on campus and at Tatte Bakery & Cafe. In both of these jobs I really love connecting with people in the community & I value providing spaces that make people feel at home. Even though it’s difficult to do that during COVID, I hope that by providing these services, I can make someone’s day a little bit better! I’m also the Director of Print Production for AmLit. In this job I’m responsible for taking student submissions and creating and managing the design of the semi-annual literary magazine that we distribute across campus. I’ve been fortunate to have an amazing team that gives me a creative space in what’s usually a very academically motivated environment at AU.
How has the Leadership Program prepared you for your current role(s) either on or off campus?
Academically, the leadership program really set me ahead of other students by placing a focus on academic writing and research, so that by the time I got into my upperclass years, I’d already produced a few research papers and policy memos, and was very familiar with the academic research process. As far as employment, the first year of the program helped develop my ability to work in a team and allowed me to learn how to contribute in a room with a lot of other dominant and outspoken personalities. I’ve been able to learn so much from my peers and foster lifetime friendships and I’m really thankful for that!
What is a message you have for other students?
You’re in charge of your own happiness. If you hate your major or what you’re doing, take ownership and do something that makes you happy!
