Hi Tina! Although I could not hear the sound on your video I will try and comment on what I understood from the slides— forgive me if I misunderstand something for this reason! I recognize your concern pertaining to your inability to conduct ethnographic research in a field that is predominantly this methodology. However, as you allude to earlier in the presentation, I think this could be a strength in your research. Because you are unable to conduct a single-case ethnographic study, you have the opportunity to view the issue at hand through a different lens. Your broader scope allows for consideration of less tangible, international factors that are always at play, but perhaps overlooked in ethnographic research. I think you are off to a great start and I look forward to seeing how our research evolves!

Very interesting research question! You demonstrate that your research is grounded in the existing literature. As you continue developing your research methodology, I think you could define the variation that you have noticed in the cases a bit more. Because you are doing Mill’s method of difference, I would emphasize the IVs that are the same among your cases and the singular one that is different. One of the strengths of your presentation is the theories that you have identified to guide your work, so let those guide how you define your IVs and intervening variables.

    Hi Tina!
Somehow I have missed your research topic all semester but it seems quite interesting! Your methodological choice seems to fit quite well with your puzzle and seems to be filling an important gap in research by comparing a relatively larger sample of cases rather than looking at individual case studies. I think it would be a good idea to narrow down your cases for the final narrative paper in order to have a firm starting point for the spring semester. Regarding your concern about reliability, I think you lay out a pretty detailed step-by-step thought process in your research design here. Therefore, if you maintain the same level of transparency throughout the research process, I believe other researchers would be able to replicate your research and understand the logic behind your analysis and findings. In terms of the operationalization of your dependent variable, are there any mechanisms that are more important than the others? If so, is there a way you can highlight that in your operationalization?
I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
    Good Luck
