Election Corruption and Disconnect with Citizens

Political Cartoons

A significant point of contention in the political cartoons is Hugo Chavez attempts to corrupt elections, as told from an American perspective. This notion is often tied to his disconnect with his citizens. These beliefs are likely drawn in response to criticism from Chavez’s assertions that the United States government is attempting to meddle in Venezuela’s elections. The U.S. government is trying to depict Chavez as a steamroller in his country. By analyzing the perspective these political cartoons are drawn from, the American need for democracy promotion is done in an attempt to solidify their superiority over Venezuela. Furthermore, there is a desire to remove Chavez because he is a threat to the United States.

These political cartoons lend themselves to the bigger picture of policies and attitudes of the United States. According to Said, modern Orientalists are implementing and advocating for policies that directly influence the operations of “The Orient.” In this context, the American government is advocating for policies that would directly impact Venezuela for “the better.” However, based on conducted cross-media analysis, the motivations of the United States are mainly non-sincere and done for political gain.
