“What are the dominant discourses about Chavez’s Venezuela from U.S. media such as newspapers, broadcast videos, political cartoons, and policy? Do they align?”

We conducted qualitative discourse analysis using NVivo software to find themes in four sources: newspapers, broadcast news, political cartoons, and United States policy. Newspapers analyzed were primarily from the New York Times, and additional articles were analyzed from Wall Street Journal. Broadcast news was collected from CNN and NBC. Political cartoons were gathered from searches on Google. In total, 57 political cartoons, 81 broadcast videos, 222 pieces of policy/legislation, and 191 newspaper articles were analyzed.

NVivo software allowed us to find similarities in themes among our sources. Along with finding similarities and differences in themes in sources, concurrence in themes within media was analyzed.
