1918 World War I – D’Filippo

Valentina D’Efilippo’s interactive online data visualization ‘Poppy Field’ memorializes the dead of all of the conflicts from 1900-2014. However, it is framed around World War I, after which poppies were established as the flower of remembrance for the fallen. The piece was released in 2014 for the centenary of the beginning of the “war to end all wars” and with a brutal elegance it shows just how wrong that epithet was. Users have many options for customizing the data, from a responsive timeline to the ability to toggle on and off different regions of conflict. Representing the conflicts as poppies was a particularly poignant and brilliant touch from an incredibly talented data artist and designer.
