Plan Op-ed

The topic I am choosing to write about is what COVID-19 has to do with Climate Change. I am writing about how the pandemic has actually been saving our planet. The debate on this topic is that going vegan could have prevented not only COVID-19 but many other human diseases. The meat industry has been one of the biggest contributors to global warming for many years now and red meat is also known to be bad for people’s health. In a Euronews article, The best way to prevent future pandemics like coronavirus? Stop eating meat and go vegan written by Elisa Allen, she writes that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that “more than 75% of emerging infectious diseases originate in animals” (Allen, 2020). Another article from Wired believes that more regulations on meat markets and other places that deal with wildlife could help with slowing future zoonotic viruses. On the other hand, some believe going vegan might not have entirely prevented COVID-19. In the article, A vegan world wouldn’t keep diseases like COVID-19 from infecting humans, from Popular Science written by Kat Eschner, epidemiologist Gregory Gary said that even if the world went completely vegan, we would still be in contact with animals that carry foreign pathogens. He also stated that animal consumption is a significant contributor to many new human diseases which is important to know. In this debate, I think it’s important to take into consideration the idea of consuming less meat for the health of the population and the environment. My position is important because it helps us understand how to prevent a future outbreak.

  10. Your topic brings up an interesting crossroads, much like the ones you face in the Traffic Rider game missions. Imagine this: you’re on a long highway in the game, weaving through traffic. Every choice you make—speeding up, slowing down, or switching lanes—determines whether you reach your goal or crash. Similarly, our real-world decisions, like choosing to reduce meat consumption, can guide us toward a safer, healthier planet.

COVID-19 and climate change are like warning signs on the road—telling us to slow down and reconsider our route. Just as reckless driving in Traffic Rider leads to chaos, unsustainable habits in real life fuel global warming and health crises. 11. That’s a really interesting perspective! I agree that the meat industry’s impact on the environment and potentially disease transmission is a serious concern. It’s a complex issue, though, and I think a multifaceted approach, including responsible farming practices and better regulations, is probably the most effective solution. Geometry Dash

  20. Look, let’s be real here. Sure, the pandemic gave the Earth a bit of a breather, but blaming meat isn’t the whole story. We can’t just flip a switch to veganism and think all diseases vanish. There’s a lot of factors at play, like habitats being destroyed and the fact that we keep pushing into wildlife areas. Going vegan is cool and all, but it ain’t the magic bullet some folks think it is.

  24. Interesting angle on the meat industry’s connection to both COVID-19 and climate change. I agree that reducing consumption could help on multiple fronts, even if it wouldn’t stop every zoonotic disease. The Choice Voicer site has similar environmental discussions worth reading.

  25. I’ve been thinking about this argument since the pandemic began. At first I didn’t connect COVID-19 with climate change, but reading about animal-to-human disease risks made the link feel real. I also notice how small lifestyle shifts—like eating less meat more often—can support both public health and emissions reduction, even if it’s not a perfect “cause-and-effect” story. If you’re exploring these ideas, you might also find helpful discussions and resources on the Bad parenting platform.

  26. Your plan handles the debate thoughtfully by pairing the CDC’s “more than 75%” figure with Gregory Gary’s caution that a completely vegan world would still involve contact with animals carrying pathogens.
