Program team contacts different organizations (church, clinics) to recruit Hispanics in the community. Create handouts and posters in Spanish and English to promote the program and distribute them throughout Coachella Valley. Talk to the local news channel to promote program. There will be a greater audience reached by using different media outlets. People will be interested to know what the program is about. There will be more people enrolled in the program. There will be an overall decrease in obesity rates in this community with more people participating.
Purchase needed materials to create notebook. Create notebooks that will contain all handouts and information that will be reviewed throughout the program. The participants will have their own “book” to take with them and study at their own time if needed, for multiple exposure of the material. Participants will have the material at home so it will encourage them to start earlier with the behavior change. Participants will have greater exposure to material being learned. Grasping better to the information allows participants to make greater behavior changes that lead to decreased risks for developing chronic health problems.
Create incentives for participating. Besides the learning lecture, offer cooking lesson at each session (except the first one) and give out the recipe as well as a small gift (e.g. measuring cups) and a raffle ticket for a big prize at the end of the program. There will be greater attendance. Participants will be motivated and interested in attending the sessions. Participants will be able to cook the recipes given to them and be encouraged to cook more meals at home. There will be increased attendance meaning lower rates of obesity.
