Program Summary

The ideally implemented Healthy Adults Equals Healthy Families program will consist of three components: environmental component focusing on displaying similar messages in multiple settings where program participators may attend; a social component which will consist of social support; and the curriculum component.

Environmental component

A set of posters/advertisements will be created which will have messages in both Spanish and English stating how the risk of obesity can affect overall health in an individual and in families. These types of advertisements will also be created showing healthier options for foods common in a Hispanic diet. They will be posted in grocery stores, community clinics, religious centers, and public social service departments. The doctor’s offices will be a part of the environmental support by providing informational brochures to their Hispanic patients that may be at risk or already have overweight/obesity.

Social component

Participants will be encouraged to bring a family member or friend to each or most of the sessions to encourage a sense of support for the enrolled adult. They will be given the same lessons and materials as the participant but will not be considered in the follow-up interview. They will both be required to maintain a journal about what types of things they do together to apply the learned material from the previous session. It will also be a way for them to write down any questions/concerns/ideas they might have and share them in the next session. The same person is highly recommended to come to every session, however if not possible, they can bring one other person. If they do not have anyone available to come with them, they can pair up with another individual person or with an already existing pair just to work on classroom activities. They would need to keep a journal themselves on how they are individually applying the knowledge and how that is working for them or if they are involving someone else at home.

Curriculum component

The program will be comprised of 12 sessions, 2 per month for 6 months. The sessions will be from 60-90 minutes long and will compromise of an interactive lecture and a cooking demo. It will be given at local religious centers and community clinics. The facilitators will be able to speak Spanish and have knowledge and understanding of the Hispanic culture. They will have previous training that will allow them to give the sessions, as well as follow the lesson plan. The friend or family member will be highly encouraged to attend the sessions to be able to partner up with the participant. There will be different activities in which partners will be allowed to come up with ideas on how to encourage one another on making the lifestyle changes.
