Welcome to the Correspondence of Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore

Lithograph with watercolor by Nathaniel Currier, 1848 (Library of Congress)

Just launched by the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University, this project will locate and publish letters, from 1844–53, of the twelfth and thirteenth U.S. presidents.

During that decade, Taylor led troops into the Republic of Texas and Mexico; Fillmore helped lead the state of New York and the University of Buffalo; and each served in the White House while the nation expanded west, displaced Native Americans, and clashed over slavery.
