How can I apply the science of learning to enhance my teaching? In the “Brain Fuel” series we explore evidence-based principles that span disciplines including psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and anthropology to dig deeper into how humans learn. In this session, we will discuss how and why “gamification” enhances student learning. We will also hear from one of CTRL’s faculty fellows about how they worked with a student to create a board game designed to teach students about the research process. This hybrid session will begin with a short presentation, followed by casual and collegial discussion.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe findings from an interdisciplinary body of research on how gamification motivates learning
2. Apply learning theory related to motivation, attitude and engagement to gamify learning in your courses
3. Critique the limitations of existing research on gamification using an equity-based lens
