Brain Fuel: Learning Styles as a Myth

October 8, 2024 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Presenters: Shed Siliman (Teaching & Learning Specialist, CTRL) and Ayah Morsy (Teaching & Learning Graduate Assistant, CTRL)

How can I apply the science of learning to enhance my teaching? In the “Brain Fuel” series we explore evidence-based principles that span disciplines including psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and anthropology to dig deeper into how humans learn. In this session, we will discuss the persistent myth of learning styles. Participants will explore the research disproving learning styles, the ethnocentric origins behind the idea, and evidence-based alternatives for optimizing learning across differences. This hybrid session will begin with a short presentation, followed by casual and collegial discussion.

Learning Outcomes

1. Critique the limitations and drawbacks of the learning styles theory.

2. Articulate how the myth of learning styles has influenced educational practices and policies.

3. Identify evidence-based alternatives to learning styles that can enhance teaching and learning.
