This semester, our campus community is engaging with an election that touches on a range of potentially traumatic issues—such as gun control, immigration policy, gender rights, and police presence—that many students have personally experienced. Though the election and related events take place outside the classroom, discussions about current politics and related traumas find their way into our courses and student’s lives. How should instructors address conversations about the election that involve these challenging and traumatic issues, given their expertise and the context of their courses? This session aims to cultivate confidence among instructors to facilitate conversations with students about the election. Participants will leave with frameworks and concrete, equitable strategies they can utilize when guiding students through these conversations.
