Are you aiming to engage students through participation and discussion? In this workshop, we will define “participation” and “discussion” together through an equity lens. We will then explore a variety of practical approaches to promoting participation and discussion. These approaches will be rooted in communicating participation expectations to students and building the skills they need to carry out meaningful and effective discussions in and out of the class. You will have the opportunity to workshop materials (syllabus, lesson plan, discussion board instructions, etc.) that you can apply to your courses.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Define participation and discussion broadly, with a focus on equity.
2. Identify strategies to promote various forms of participation and discussion in and out of class.
3. Develop a plan to enhance participation and build discussion skills among students in your course.
