Research Methods Talk: Power Analyses: Conceptual and Applications

October 10, 2024 @ 11:15 am - 12:30 pm

Eric R. Schuler (Senior Quantitative/Computational Research Methodologist, Center for Teaching, Research & Learning)

You have your research project in mind, the significance section of the grant is ready… then you are asked ‘have you conducted a power analysis?’… and that is when the panic sets in… This session will focus on what statistical power is conceptually and walk through the process of different ways to conducting a power analysis using R.

Important Notes: While we will be talking through some R code, it will not be necessary to have your laptop with you/R-Studio installed, but you are more than welcome to bring your computer with you to try the code out.

Learning  Outcomes:

1. Explain what statistical power is and what factors impact power.
2. Extract information needed to run a power analysis.
3. Compare different approaches of determining adequate sample size.
4. Describe the steps needed to conduct a power analysis with example code.
