Get Consent

  • Everyone needs a strong yes for consent!
  • Consent does not always have to be verbal, but it is good to practice giving an enthusiastic yes and discussing what activities someone and their partner/s feel comfortable with.
  • Everyone needs to consent and to give it every time for every activity no matter what
  • Consent can be withdrawn at any time once someone consents to something they can still take it away if they no longer want to
  • Use affirmative language to confirm consent and ask “ is it okay if we do ____ ” to ask for consent, clear communication is important
  • Be aware that physical cues don’t always mean consent sometimes people are unsure what to do and will not verbalize enthusiastic consent or will seem to be giving physical cues for consent but will be feeling uncomfortable
  • Any form of a no means NOStop what you are doing and do NOT continue to pursue sexual activity
  • In most states someone must be 18 years or older to give consent, even if someone says they give consent, if they are younger than 18 they can not.
  • Coercion is when there is pressure or a threat for someone to engage in sexual activity, if there is coercion then there is not consent
    • Examples:
      • Feeling like one owes someone sex
      • Someone repeatedly asking one for sex and “wearing them down”
      • Being tricked into sex or agreeing to one type of sex but being forced into another
      • An authority figure pursuing our forcing one into having sex
      • Threatening someone
