Aria Wanek

For my multimodal project, I made a mini-podcast as a spin-off of the Dish City series, but based in Minneapolis. In my episode, I talk about Somali migration to Minneapolis, staples in Somali cuisine, and Somali spaghetti & how that came to be the de facto national dish of Somalia. I wanted to make a podcast to tie together everything that we’ve been learning about this year, and give me some insight into the production process. Making this podcast had shown me that any city can be explored and better understood through its food, and people use food to express what home means to them. Hope you enjoy!

This is the link to a Somali food blog with bunch of the recipes I frequently cited, some of which I tried out myself and ended up being delicious.

If you’re interested in further research about this topic, this website is a good crash course in Somali colonization. I used other sources as well, but this gives a holistic view if you’re looking for a brief yet detailed summary.

I thought it was really cool how you tried all these different dishes relating to the podcast you listened to! It made me want to try this food now too. Also, i’m very impressed by your podcast! It sounded very professional and I liked your theme of how Somalian cuisine represents resilience! Nice job!

From Jake: First of all, you’re a much better host than most we’ve heard for this class. I was waiting for someone to make their own podcast episode, and in my opinion yours does one of the things that makes a podcast unique from other mediums. I would’ve never thought to seek out more information about the Minneapolis food scene on my own, but you presented an interesting topic that I had no idea there was so much depth to. Good topic and very well-spoken.
