Date: Wednesday, August 14
Time: 03:00 PM – 3:50 PM
Presenters: Martinique Sealy (Postdoctoral Researcher, CTRL)
Session Description:
This session explores the incorporation of students’ funds of knowledge (FoK) into classroom curricula. A qualitative and a mixed methods study examining Hybrid Discourse Spaces (e.g., integrating everyday knowledge with scientific knowledge) in Science classrooms with diverse student samples will be discussed as examples. Connections will be made to asset-based and culturally inclusive pedagogies, as the session is based on the premise that students’ diverse identities, languages, and lived experiences (referred to as FoK, following Moll et al., 1992) are valuable resources for their learning. Ties will also be made to teacher’s FoK. This session will: 1) explore how teachers recognized the diverse FoK of students, 2) examine the relationship between teachers’ FoK and students’ FoK, and 3) investigate the extent to which teachers integrated students’ FoK into their teaching methods (e.g., creating hybrid discourse spaces; Bae, et. al., 2022).
Learning Outcomes:
• Recognize the Value of Funds of Knowledge (FoK): Participants will be able to identify and appreciate the diverse identities, languages, and lived experiences of students as valuable resources for learning, following the concept of FoK (Moll et al., 1992).
• Analyze Teacher-Student FoK Relationships: Participants will examine the dynamic relationship between teachers’ and students’ funds of knowledge, understanding how these interactions can influence classroom practices and student engagement.
• Implement Inclusive Teaching Methods: Participants will learn to integrate students’ funds of knowledge into their teaching methods effectively, creating hybrid discourse spaces that foster culturally inclusive and asset-based pedagogies (Bae et al., 2022).
• Evaluate Impact of FoK Integration: Participants will assess the impact of incorporating students’ FoK on the educational outcomes of students, understanding the potential benefits of recognizing and utilizing students’ diverse backgrounds in curriculum design.
