702: The New Wisdom of AI-power: Purdue OWL & the Changing Landscape of Popular Generative AI Tools

Session Location: This session will be held virtually via Zoom

Date: Thursday, August 15

Time: 1:30 PM – 2:45 PM

Presenters: Alison Thomas (Assistant Dean for Academic Integrity and Hurst Senior Professorial Lecturer)

Session Description:

Some of the most popular “help” tools have begun using AI power. As faculty, we may recommend these tools without knowing what they’re capable of – is Grammarly just a grammar-checker? Is the Purdue OWL just a basic citation resource? These and other commonly used (and recommended) help tools have begun to use AI power, and have considerably expanded their capabilities. What do we need to know in order to give students clear guidelines for using these tools responsibly (if at all)? This session encourages faculty to think about recommended tools and about articulating expectations that focus on the functions of a particular tool, rather than on its brand name.

Learning Outcomes:

• Compare previous and current iterations of popular “help” tools
• Identify features of popular AI-powered “help” tools
• Practice articulating guidance for appropriate use of generative AI tools, with focus on what tools do (instead of their brand names)
