101: AI Misuse, Fatigue, and Literacy: Updates from the Office of Academic Integrity
Session Location: Hall of Science (HoS) Room T-07 | Google Map
Date: Wednesday, August 19
Time: 9:15 AM – 10:15 AM
Presenter: Alison Thomas (Assistant Dean for Academic Integrity)
In this session, participants will learn about recent academic integrity trends and challenges from the Office of Academic Integrity (OAI). We’ll share some of the general and specific data from our cases this year, with special attention to concerns about the misuse of generative AI, and we’ll offer insights about the most common concerns for faculty and students. Why and how are students using, and misusing, generative AI tools? What does AI misuse reveal about student approaches to learning, and how might we as faculty use what we learn to establish and reach course learning outcomes? We’ll present key questions for discussion that can help faculty think about course design, AI-use guidelines and AI literacy, along with recommendations for syllabus and assignment language.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Define current academic integrity trends at AU and situate them in a larger context
2. Describe examples of AI use and misuse, with particular attention to “responsible use” guidelines
3. Identify the issues behind recurring concerns of AI misuse and consider how to address those in course design and materials in order to articulate clear and realistic guidelines for syllabi and assignments
